Day 92

"Consider the work of God"

Text: Ecclesiastes 7:13

BRING GOD INTO THE PICTURE

Solomon had been discussing the significance of having wisdom in life. With wisdom, one is able to understand life better. If there should be an inheritance, the possession of wisdom would be an advantage.

“Consider the work of God;
For who can make straight what He has made crooked?”
Ecclesiastes 7:13

1. “Consider the work of God”

a) Wisdom must lead us to consider God in our life.
b) Life cannot be fully comprehended without bringing God into the picture.
c) In thinking about God, one cannot help but consider His work.
d) “The work of God”
i) Solomon was not discussing the works of God individually.
ii) He was thinking about His work in a collective sense.
iii) The work of God would then simply be called “Creation”.

2. God’s hand is to be appreciated in Creation

a) He made the universe.
b) He made things the way they are.
c) Even the finest of minds cannot fully fathom “the work of God”.

3. “For who can make straight what He has made crooked?”

a) There are things that God made “crooked”.
b) No one can understand why He made things the way they appear.
c) But when God made a thing “crooked”, no one can make it straight.

4. It may be something as innocuous as the tail of a pig

If the tail of a pig is not straight, no matter what may be attempted, it remains curled.

5. What was Solomon’s point?

a) As much as he extolled the significance of human wisdom, there are limits.
b) Human wisdom cannot change the work of God.
c) Humility is necessary when seeking to understand and appreciate the place of human wisdom.
d) Wisdom is excellent, but it is still very limited.
