MEDITATION
Exodus 21:15-17
15 “And he who strikes his father or his mother shall surely be put to death.
16 “He who kidnaps a man and sells him, or if he is found in his hand, shall surely be put to death.
17 “And he who curses his father or his mother shall surely be put to death.
MEANINGFUL APPLICATION TO LIFE
1. Striking of parents
a. This is deemed a serious crime.
b. This is of course a terrible sin.
c. Striking of aged parents could lead to:
i. Serious injury.
ii. It could lead to death.
d. The death penalty is applicable.
e. The Fifth Commandments is broken. “Honour your father and your mother” (Exodus 20:12).
2. The cursing of parents
a. This is verbal abuse.
b. This kind of abuse is sinful.
c. It was codified as a Law in ancient Israel.
d. The Fifth Commandment is in mind.
3. Kidnap and slavery
a. Kidnapping is a serious crime.
b. Selling a person as a slave is another serious wrongdoing.
c. To do this could result in the killing of the kidnapped victim.
i. Slaves do not easily survive in a foreign country.
ii. Slaves were treated very cruelly and brutally.
iii. If the slaves were children, then this crime is even more horrendous.
d. If kidnapping and selling people is for profit, then the 10th Commandment is broken. “You shall not covet” (Exodus 20:17).
