Text: Exodus 22: 5-6
MEDITATION
Exodus 22:5-6
5 “If a man causes a field or vineyard to be grazed, and let loose his animal, and it feeds in another man’s field, he shall make restitution from the best of his own field and the best of his own vineyard.
6 “If fire breaks out and catches in thorns, so that stacked grain, standing grain, or the field is consumed, he who kindled the fire shall surely make restitution.
MEANINGFUL APPLICATION TO LIFE
1. Irresponsibility
a. A person must always act responsibly.
b. He cannot allow his animal to feed in another person’s field.
2. The law of Restitution
a. If found guilty, he must make restitution.
b. He must make restitution:
i. From the best of his own field.
ii. From the best of his vineyard.
3. If fire breaks out
a. The cause of the fire must be investigated.
b. If the individual is found guilty of starting the fire that destroys:
i. The harvest of a neighbour
ii. His stacked grain
iii. His field
The damage may be quite extensive.
4. The Law of Restitution would apply
a. He must pay in full for the damage suffered.
b. The judge would have to determine the penalty.
THE LAWS OF ANCIENT ISRAEL
1. Restitution was foremost in mind.
2. Jailing a person was not the main focus.

5 人若在田间或在葡萄园里放牲畜,任凭牲畜上别人的田里去吃,就必拿自己田间上好的和葡萄园上好的赔还。6 若点火焚烧荆棘,以致将别人堆积的禾捆、站着的禾稼或是田园,都烧尽了,那点火的必要赔还。
