Text: Exodus 22: 20-21
MEDITATION
Exodus 22:20-21
20 “He who sacrifices to any god, except to the LORD only, he shall be utterly destroyed.
21 “You shall neither mistreat a stranger nor oppress him, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.
MEANINGFUL APPLICATION TO LIFE
1. Instructions concerning the worship of the LORD
a. This was already made very clear.
b. God’s roles in Israel’s history were very clear.
i. As Deliverer (Saviour, Redeemer)
ii. As Protector
iii. As Provider
c. It is logical that worship ought to be given to the Lord alone!
2. The worship of other “gods”
a. This was expressly forbidden.
b. The Canaanites worshiped many gods.
i. Some gods demanded human sacrifice.
ii. Other gods demanded mutilation of the body.
3. The penalty involved
a. God reserves the right to enforce this law.
b. This includes the right to “destroy” the idolatrous person.
c. This was a punitive and deterrent statement.
4. Strangers living among the people of Israel
a. There must be no mistreatment of strangers:
i. No discrimination
ii. No racial prejudices
iii. No unfairness
b. Israel must never forget their sojourn in Egypt.
i. They were badly treated.
ii. They must not treat others in the same way.
iii. They must never oppress strangers as they had been oppressed.
