TITLE: “I am your shield”
Texts: Genesis 15; Psalm 3:1-6; Psalm 5:11-12; Psalm 28:6-7
INTRODUCTION
1. Faith begins with Knowledge of God
2. What we have learned about God thus far
(From our reading of Genesis)
a) That He is Real
b) That He will Relate
c) That He will Bless
d) That He will Provide
e) That He will Protect
3. The Knowledge of God
a) It becomes the substance of our faith
b) “The substance of things hoped for” Hebrews 11:1a
c) This knowledge may be called:
i) Doctrine
ii) Truth
REVIEW OF ABRAM’S FAITH-RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD
1. He believed in God
a) That God had called him out of his homeland to a new country
b) That God would bless as He had promised
c) That God would protect him as he travelled for thousands of kilometers
d) His knowledge and faith in God continued to grow
2. His belief empowered him
a) To be kind and gracious
b) To be good and forgiving
c) To be brave and strong enough
i) To fight the Northern Coalition of kings
ii) To defeat them
iii) To rescue Lot and others who had been taken prisoner
THE DANGER THAT WAS VERY REAL
1. The Revenge of the Northern Coalition of kings
a) They had been defeated
b) They had been humiliated
i) Abraham had such a small army
ii) He wasn’t even a kingdom
c) They could easily return and attack Abram with an even larger force
2. Abram would not be able to defend himself
a) If the Northern Coalition of kings decide to come back to attack
b) If the kings of the Southern Coalition turned against Abram
i) Many were wild
ii) They were wicked (Sodom and Gomorrah)
GOD’S PROMISE TO ABRAM
1. It was called “The word of the LORD” Genesis 15:1a
2. It was given in “a vision” Genesis 15:1b
a) A graphic portrayal
b) Abram could see this “shield” of God
3. The content of this “word of the LORD”
a) “Do not be afraid” Genesis 15:1c
i) It was natural to be afraid
ii) The threat was very real
iii) God allayed Abram’s fears
b) “I am your shield” Genesis 15:1d
i) To symbolize protection
ii) To symbolize power
c) “Your exceedingly great reward” Genesis 15:1e
i) This was an additional promise
ii) Abram had refused any material award
iii) God Himself would be his reward
iv) It would be the very best reward ever
APPROPRIATE RESPONSE TO GOD’S WORD
1. We need to have a Response
a) Normal
b) Natural
2. Responses ought to be Appropriate
a) Stemming from Faith
b) “The evidence of things not seen” Hebrews 11:1b
APPLICATION OF THE DOCTRINE OF PROTECTION
1. All doctrines may be applied to our life
2. God’s Truth will transcend time
3. It would be good for Abram and also for King David!
LEARNING HOW KING DAVID APPLIED THIS TRUTH IN HIS LIFE
1. Believing in Personal Protection from enemies
3 But You, O LORD, are a shield for me,
My glory and the One who lifts up my head.
4 I cried to the LORD with my voice,
And He heard me from His holy hill.
Psalm 3:3-4
