"He still taught the people knowledge"

Text: Ecclesiastes 12:9

COMMITMENT TO TEACH KNOWLEDGE

Solomon was drawing to the close of his Book. He reflected on what he was doing in writing his book.

“And moreover, because the Preacher was wise,
he still taught the people knowledge;
yes, he pondered and sought out and set in order many proverbs.”
Ecclesiastes 12:9

1. “And moreover, because the Preacher was wise”

a) It would be good to trace how the Preacher became so wise.

b) This story is found in 1 Kings 3.

i) God had appeared to Solomon in a dream.

ii) Solomon was allowed to ask for anything he wished.

iii) Solomon’s wish was for

“An understanding heart to judge…
That I may discern between good and evil…”
1 Kings 3:9

iv) God was more than pleased to answer this prayer.

“I have given you a wise and understanding heart…”
1 Kings 3:12

2. “He still taught the people knowledge”

a) He knew that as king, he must seek to educate the people.

b) He was deeply committed to personally teach the people knowledge.

c) Ecclesiastes reflects the scope of knowledge he sought to teach.

3. “Yes, he pondered and sought out and set in order many proverbs”

a) God gave Solomon a wise and understanding heart.

b) But Solomon had to do his part to acquire knowledge and wisdom.

a) “Pondered”

He studied and pondered deeply.

b) “Sought out”

i) Israel’s store of knowledge.

ii) Other peoples’ history and knowledge.

iii) Solomon made every effort to seek knowledge and wisdom.

c) Set in order many proverbs.

i) Knowledge had to become wisdom.

ii) Wisdom offers important insights of life.

iii) These gems of wisdom need to be put into “proverbial sayings”.

This was no easy task at all! Solomon worked hard at creating effective
Proverbial sayings!
