YOUTH WORSHIP SERVICE 26 June 2021

Scripture Text: Genesis 19:1-11

Message: “I will go down now and see ” Genesis 18:21

INTRODUCTION

1. Some chapters in the Bible can be difficult to read and understand
Genesis 19 is one of those chapters

2. But we must not be afraid of reading about the bad things that people can do

3. The Scriptures teach us about real life and there are some hard truths we must grapple with

4. Thank God for grace and wisdom to be able to read and understand the Bible

SODOM AND GOMORRAH

1. The geographical terrain described

a) The plain of Jordan, well-watered everywhere Genesis 13:10a
b) It was like “the garden of the LORD” Genesis 13:10b
c) “Like the land of Egypt as you go toward Zoar” Genesis 13:10c

2. Lot’s Choice

a) He chose all the plain of Jordan Genesis 13:11a
b) He dwelt in the cities of the plain Genesis 13:12a
c) He pitched his tent as far as Sodom Genesis 13:12b

3. The Reputation of Sodom

a) The men of Sodom described
b) They were exceedingly wicked and sinful
against the LORD Genesis 13:13

A BRIEF REVIEW OF THE HISTORY OF SODOM AND GOMORRAH

1. They were captured by the Northern Coalition of kings Genesis 14:1-3

2. They rebelled against their overlord Genesis 14:4

3. They were recaptured by the Northern Coalition Genesis 14:5-12

4. They were rescued by Abram and some of his allies Genesis 14:13-20

5. The king of Sodom asked to have his subjects back Genesis 14:21-24

THE PLANNED VISIT TO SODOM AND GOMORRAH

1. Three heavenly visitors met up with Abraham Genesis 18:1-15

2. The Lord revealed to Abraham His planned visit Genesis 18:16-21

a) “Because the outcry against Sodom
and Gomorrah is great” Genesis 18:20a
b) “And because their sin is very grave” Genesis 18:20b

THE TWO ANGELS FROM HEAVEN

1. They had walked all the way to Sodom
It was evening time Genesis 19:1a

2. Lot was sitting at the gate of Sodom Genesis 19:1b

a) The city gate
i) It was the commercial centre
ii) It was also the place of jurisdiction (local court)
b) “To sit at the gate” was an idiom
i) Lot had become a leading citizen there
ii) He had some kind of an official position

3. Lot’s Hospitality to the Two Angels

a) He bowed himself to them Genesis 19:1c
b) He invited them to stay in his house overnight Genesis 19:2a
c) This was declined initially
“No, but we will spend the night in the open square” Genesis 19:2b
d) He insisted and the Two Angels accepted his invitation Genesis 19:3

THE WICKED INTENTIONS OF THE MEN IN SODOM AND GOMORRAH

1. A stark description of the men who visited Lot’s house

a) Both old and young Genesis 19:4a
b) All the people from every quarter Genesis 19:4b
c) They surrounded Lot’s house Genesis 19:4c

2. They called out to Lot brazenly

a) “Where are the men who came to you tonight?” Genesis 19:5a
b) “Bring them out to us that we may know them
carnally” Genesis 19:5b

3. Lot’s Protest and Plea

a) He opened the door and met the crowd Genesis 19:6
b) “Please, my brethren, do not do so wickedly” Genesis 19:7
c) He offered his two daughters
i) “Who have not known a man” (virgins) Genesis 19:8a
ii) “You may do to them as you wish” Genesis 19:8b

4. The Rejection of the Men of Sodom

a) They rejected this offer
“Stand back” Genesis 19:9a
b) They mocked Lot
i) “This one came in to stay here” Genesis 19:9b
ii) “And he keeps acting as a judge” Genesis 19:9c
c) They warned Lot
i) “Now we will deal worse with you
than with them” Genesis 19:9d
ii) They pressed hard against Lot
and came near to break down the door Genesis 19:9e

5. The rescue of Lot

a) The Two Angels pulled Lot into the house
with them and shut the door Genesis 19:10
b) They struck the men who were at the doorway
with blindness Genesis 19:11a
c) Both small and great
So that they became weary trying to find the door Genesis 19:11b

CONCLUSION

1. God will hear and answer prayers
“The outcry against it that has come to Me” Genesis 18:21

2. He will also listen to intercessions
Abraham pleaded with the Lord to spare Sodom and Gomorrah
For the sake of ten righteous men Genesis 18:32

3. Two Angels visited Sodom

a) They were threatened with rape
b) Lot was in danger too Genesis 19:1-11

4. The Judgments of the LORD

a) They are true
b) And righteous altogether Psalm 19:9b
