"Your own wickedness will correct you"

Text: Jeremiah 2:19

THE SINFULNESS OF JUDAH

The sinful state of Judah had to be addressed as candidly as possible!

“‘Your own wickedness will correct you,
And your backslidings will rebuke you.
Know therefore and see that it is an evil and bitter thing
That you have forsaken the LORD your God,
And the fear of Me is not in you,’
Says the Lord GOD of hosts.”
Jeremiah 2:19

1. “Your own wickedness will correct you”

a) Wickedness
i) It was in the heart.
ii) It expressed itself in wicked deeds.
b) Correction
i) Wicked deeds would produce fruit of its kind.
ii) The fruit of wickedness will come back and afflict the wicked person.

2. “And your backslidings will rebuke you”

a) Backsliding was another major problem.
i) There may have been some remorse.
ii) But the people would return to their sinful ways.
b) Rebuke
i) There will be self-rebuke.
ii) The conscience will rebuke the backslider if nobody else will.

3. “Know therefore and see that it is an evil and bitter thing that you have forsaken the LORD your God”

a) Judah had forsaken the LORD their God.
b) Two aspects may be highlighted:
i) That it is an evil thing.
ii) That it is a bitterly wrong and wicked thing to do.

4. “And the fear of Me is not in you”

a) Judah had not reverenced God at all.
b) There was little or no regard of the Lord at all.

5. “Says the Lord GOD of hosts”

a) The source of this word may be traced back to the LORD.
b) He is called by a very formal and awesome title: “The LORD God of hosts”
i) This is like the “battle name” for God.
ii) The word “hosts” refers to the mighty armies of God.
iii) The LORD is the Commander of the mightiest army.
iv) Woe betides the nation that has wickedly forsaken its LORD and God.
