MEDITATION
Exodus 34:19-20
19 “All that open the womb are Mine, and every male firstborn among your livestock, whether ox or sheep.
20 But the firstborn of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb. And if you will not redeem him, then you shall break his neck. All the firstborn of your sons you shall redeem.
“And none shall appear before Me empty-handed.
MEANINGFUL APPLICATION TO LIFE
1. This passage must be read carefully
2. It has limited application
a. It applies to Israel only.
b. It cannot be applied to Gentiles (other nations).
3. All male offspring
a. They belong to God in a special way.
b. This includes even the animals.
i. All livestock
ii. Flocks
iii. Herds
3. The principle of “redemption”
a. A donkey may be “redeemed” with an offering of a lamb.
b. If the lamb is not given, the life of the donkey is forfeited.
It would have to die!
c. The donkey cannot be offered to God as an offering!
4. The principle of redemption of the firstborn male includes sons
a. All firstborn males belong to God in a special way.
b. God had spared their lives when He passed over Egypt.
5. None must appear before God empty-handed
a. The context here is that of the practice of redemption of the firstborn male.
b. An offering is necessary.
c. None must ignore this special command from God.

19 凡头生的都是我的,一切牲畜头生的,无论是牛是羊,公的都是我的。
20 头生的驴要用羊羔代赎,若不代赎就要打折它的颈项。凡头生的儿子都要赎出来。谁也不可空手朝见我。
