"The ark of the covenant of the LORD"

Text: Jeremiah 3:16

THE ARK OF THE COVENANT

The Ark of the Covenant had a significant place in the history of Israel. (A few names were given to describe it.) The design for the Ark was given by God Himself. Bezalel, the chief artisan personally made the Ark of the Testimony (Exodus 25:10-22; 37:1-9).

The Ark represented a number of things to Israel.

1. The Ark of the Testimony (Exodus 25:21-22)

a) The Ark contained the two Stone Tablets given by God.
b) These laws were called “Testimony”.

2. The Ark of the Covenant (Jeremiah 3:16; 1 Samuel 4:5)

a) The Ark represented the Covenant God gave to Israel.
b) There was a special Covenant relationship with God.

3. The Ark of God (1 Samuel 4:13)

a) This was a shortened name.
b) The Ark of God pointed to the LORD Himself.

A SPECIAL PROPHETIC MESSAGE

This was a special message God gave to Jeremiah to Israel/ Judah.

“‘Then it shall come to pass, when you are multiplied
and increased in the land in those days,’ says the LORD,
‘that they will say no more,
‘The ark of the covenant of the LORD.’
It shall not come to mind, nor shall they remember it,
nor shall they visit it, nor shall it be made anymore.'”
Jeremiah 3:16

1. “‘Then it shall come to pass, when you are multiplied and increased in the land in those days,’ says the LORD”

a) This was a prophetic word.
b) It looked way beyond the days of Jeremiah.
c) God will bring His people back to their homeland.
d) The nation will once again be “multiplied and increased in the land”.

2. “That they will say no more, ‘The ark of the covenant of the LORD.’ It shall not come to mind, nor shall they remember it, nor shall they visit it, nor shall it be made anymore.”

a) “The ark of the covenant of the LORD”
i) This will no longer be the concern of the nation.
ii) It would not even come to mind.
iii) No one would remember it.
iv) No visit would be made to see the ark of the covenant.
v) It would never be made again.
b) This was a bold and difficult prophecy to utter.
i) The ark of the covenant was tied in with the history of the nation.
ii) It was also tied in to the religion of the nation.
iii) Jeremiah would have a hard time from people who would challenge this prophecy from the Lord.
