Text: Exodus 35: 1-3
MEDITATION
Exodus 35:1-3
1 Then Moses gathered all the congregation of the children of Israel together, and said to them, “These are the words which the LORD has commanded you to do:
2 Work shall be done for six days, but the seventh day shall be a holy day for you, a Sabbath of rest to the LORD. Whoever does any work on it shall be put to death.
3 You shall kindle no fire throughout your dwellings on the Sabbath day.”
MEANINGFUL APPLICATION TO LIFE
1. Repeated teaching
a. Some of the teachings of Moses were repeated.
b. Basic reasons for repeated teaching:
i. As a reminder
ii. As emphasis
iii. As exhortation
2. Addressing the congregation of the children of Israel
a. Special meetings could have been called.
b. Perhaps, a few days before the Sabbath.
3. The Subject: The Keeping of the Sabbath
a. A commandment of the Lord.
i. This word was a commandment from God.
ii. It was not meant to be seen as a mere suggestion.
b. It had to be clearly taught.
i. It was for everyone in the congregation of Israel.
ii. It applies to everyone.
4. The work week
a. They may work for 6 days.
b. But the seventh day is the Sabbath.
5. How the Sabbath is to be regarded
a. It is a holy day for the people.
b. It is meant to be a day of rest to the Lord.
c. “To the LORD”
i. In obedience to the Lord.
ii. In honour of the Lord and His commandments.
iii. In worship and doing good deeds.
6. A penalty clause
a. There was a penalty clause for the children of Israel.
b. There was a heavy penalty: Death
i. This is to deal with the person who defies God’s word.
ii. Only the very rebellious and unrepentant will challenge this clear commandment.
iii. This penalty cannot be meted out without careful examination of the lawbreaker.
7. What about the kindling of a fire?
a. Starting a fire:
i. It would take effort.
ii. It would mean work.
b. The kindling of a fire can be done prior to the Sabbath.
c. There is no need to break the Sabbath law in the kindling of a fire!
