ABRAHAM STILL STOOD BEFORE THE LORD
In these challenging times, one of the things that we should do even more is to pray. Not only should we pray for ourselves, we should also learn to pray for others. At one of our Youth Worship services, Pastor spoke on the prayer that Abraham made on behalf of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. The Lord God had just revealed to him about the outcry against these cities and what He was going to do. Abraham sought to pray for these cities.
Abraham still stood before the Lord.” Gen.18:22
Abraham was seeking to pray on behalf of the people of Sodom and Gomorrah, especially for his nephew Lot and family. He was conscious that the Lord God was merciful and He was a God who would hear and answer his pleas. He sought to pray that He would graciously spare the cities.
PRAYING HUMBLY BEFORE THE LORD
Indeed now I who am but dust and ashes have taken it upon myself to speak to the Lord.” Gen. 18:27
As Abraham stood before the Lord, on one hand, he saw Him as the righteous Judge of the earth. He was able to relate to God as God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth (Gen. 14:22). On the other hand, he saw himself as only dust and ashes before Him. This was indeed a most humble view of himself. He knew that when God created Adam, he was made from the dust of the earth (Gen. 2:7). Abraham viewed himself correctly that he was “nothing” before Him. With deep humility, he took it upon himself to speak to the Lord. He saw God as the great God who is in control of heaven and earth and the lives of all those in the cities. He humbly sought to plead for the lives of the people of Sodom and Gomorrah.
We too should remember that we are but dust and ashes as we relate to Him in prayer. It is wise to have a lowly view of ourselves in the sight of our Lord God. We are to speak humbly before Him and to Him. The times that we are living in now are most challenging. A main issue that has been raised up recently is that of mental health of students. Praying humbly to God and trusting in Him aids us in finding His mercy and grace to be strong mentally. We can learn to pray with greater faith in God for ourselves and for each other that we may be able to cope with the challenges of school and life amidst this Covid 19 pandemic. Let’s learn to humbly and compassionately pray for each other and to keep praying.
