Text: Luke 1:30-38
A MEANINGFUL CONVERSATION
1. The angel Gabriel explained what he meant in his greetings
a. He allayed Mary’s fear.
b. She had indeed found favour with God (Luke 1:30).
2. A glorious prophecy
a. Mary will conceive and bear a Son.
b. She will name her Son, “Jesus” (Saviour) {Luke 1:31}
c. The Baby Jesus
i. He will be great.
ii. He will be called “The Son of the Highest”.
iii. God will give Him the throne of his father David.
iv. He will reign over the house of Jacob (Israel) forever.
v. His kingdom is an eternal one, there will be no end (Luke 1:32-33).
3. Mary was understandably astonished
a. A simple question was raised.
“How can this be, since I do not know a man?” (Luke 1:34)
b. This was not an expression of doubt.
c. Mary really did not understand how she could have such a glorious Son when she was not even married yet.
4. Gabriel’s patient answer
a. The power of the Spirit of God will do a special work.
i. The Holy Spirit will come upon Mary.
ii. His power will overshadow her.
iii. She will give birth to the Holy One, the Son of God (Luke 1:35).
Divine power will be employed to bring about this miraculous birth!
b. A special word of encouragement.
i. Elizabeth, a cousin of Mary was pregnant.
ii. She was deemed barren, yet she was now with child.
iii. A special thought given:
“For with God nothing is impossible.” (Luke 1:37)
5. Mary’s humble response
a. Humble response
“Behold the maidservant of the LORD!” (Luke 1:38a)
b. Grateful acceptance
“Let it be to me according to your word.” (Luke 1:38b)
The angel Gabriel left her shortly after. His mission had met with good success.
