"Full of the fury of the LORD"

Text: Jeremiah 6:11

THE FURY OF THE LORD

The anger of the Lord had notched up a little more. There was anger and then wrath. Now God spoke about His fury!

“Therefore I am full of the fury of the LORD.
I am weary of holding it in.
‘I will pour it out on the children outside,
And on the assembly of young men together;
For even the husband shall be taken with the wife,
The aged with him who is full of days.
And their houses shall be turned over to others,
Fields and wives together;
For I will stretch out My hand
Against the inhabitants of the land,’ says the LORD.”
Jeremiah 6:11-12

1. “Therefore I am full of the fury of the LORD”

a) The third person was used as a literary expression.
b) This describes the nature of the word “fury”.
i) It is associated with the LORD.
ii) It is therefore a holy and righteous fury.
iii) It is escalated anger and wrath.
c) Understanding this concept:
i) This is a response of God.
ii) Fury is NOT an attribute of God.
iii) It is a response of God who has shown immense mercy.
iv) But everything that God had said had been rejected!

2. “I am weary of holding it in”

a) This is using an anthropomorphic expression.
i) God is using human language.
ii) As man gets weary holding fury in.
iii) So, God expresses candidly how He feels.

3. “I will pour it out on the children outside,
And on the assembly of young men together;
For even the husband shall be taken with the wife,
The aged with him who is full of days.”

a) This fury would be poured out in full.
b) The people who would suffer the brunt of His fury:
i) The young men
ii) The husband and his wife
iii) The aged ones who are full of days

4. “And their houses shall be turned over to others, fields and wives together”

a) Houses would be affected.
b) Fields
c) Wives
d) Turned over to others.
i) The Invaders would own everything.
ii) Even the wives would become the property of the Invaders.

5. “‘For I will stretch out My hand against the inhabitants of the land,’ says the LORD”

a) The stretching out of God’s hand:
i) The hand of God would not be stretched out in blessing.
ii) It would be stretched out in fury.
b) The inhabitants of the land:
i) In the past, the usual phrase was, “the children of Israel”.
ii) They were now simply called, “the inhabitants of the land”.
iii) Judah had become badly estranged from the LORD.
