Text: Luke 4: 5-8
THE SECOND TEMPTATION
1. Satan had no answer to what the Lord Jesus declared in the first Temptation.
2. He moved on to the second Temptation.
THE OFFER OF THE GLORY OF KINGDOMS
1. Satan knew that many men were tempted by:
a. The possession of Authority
b. Or by possession of glory of kingdoms
2. He took the Lord Jesus into a high mountain and showed the Lord Jesus all kingdoms of the world (Luke 4:5).
3. He made this offer to the Lord Jesus:
a. “All this authority I will give You, and their glory.”
b. “For this has been delivered to me.”
c. “And I give it to whomever I wish.”
d. “Therefore, if You will worship before Me, all will be Yours.” (Luke 4:5-7)
4. What Satan desired from the Lord Jesus
a. To offer him worship.
b. The Lord Jesus could then have:
i. Authority
ii. Glory
iii. All that the human heart may desire.
THE RESP0NSE OF THE LORD JESUS
1. Outright rejection of this offer
“Get behind Me, Satan!” (Luke 4:8a)
a. The Lord Jesus recognized His tempter.
b. He was none other than Satan.
c. He saw through his cunning words.
d. He refused the offer of Satan totally.
2. Citing the Scriptures again “It is written” (Luke 4:8b)
a. The Lord Jesus had already cited the Scriptures.
i. He would live by the Scriptures.
ii. He would never go against the Lord’s word.
b. The Lord Jesus was absolutely consistent.
i. The Scriptures would lead and guide Him.
ii. They would be His delight to know and to obey.
3. Worship is to be given to God alone
“You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve.” (Luke 4:8c)
