COMING TO THE LORD JESUS AS THE TRUE BREAD FROM HEAVEN

The Lord Jesus is indeed the true bread that came down from heaven. He was instructing the people to not focus on seeking physical food but to seek for the spiritual food that would endure to everlasting life (John 6:27). He was pointing them to Himself as the bread of life. Those who would come to the Lord Jesus will find spiritual satisfaction. Those who believe in Him will not be cast off.

APPRECIATING THE SIGNIFICANCE OF COMING TO THE LORD JESUS

“All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out. … This is the will of the Father who sent Me, that of all He has given Me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day.”
John 6:37, 39

1. THE FATHER’S INVISIBLE PART – HE CALLS PEOPLE TO COME TO THE LORD JESUS

All that the Father gives to the Lord Jesus is a reference to a category of people who believe in Him. This group of people who are given to the Lord Jesus will come to Him. They would be called by the Lord God and they will be drawn by Him to seek the Lord Jesus. This is part of the will of the Father.

2. THE LORD JESUS’S PART – HE KEEPS THOSE WHO COME TO HIM

Those who have sincere faith when they come to the Lord will be specially received and kept by Him. Because the Lord Jesus is most gracious, He will never ever cast them out. This is the Lord’s commitment in holding on to them. The word “it” (John 6:39) is a reference to this category of people. The Lord Jesus will unquestionably lose none from those who believe. He remains faithful and He will raise it up at the last day. The Lord Jesus gives them this definite assurance of the resurrection of life.

3. MAN’S PART – PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY TO BELIEVE IN THE LORD

A. THOSE WHO SEE THE LORD BUT DO NOT BELIEVE IN HIM (JOHN 6:36)

The disciples and the multitudes ate of the same physical bread from the Lord Jesus (John 6:10-13). And yet not all would believe in Him. Some would reject having faith in Him.

B. THOSE WHO SEE THE LORD AND BELIEVE IN HIM (JOHN 6:40)

These would see the Lord Jesus for who He really is. They would come to the Lord Jesus and genuinely choose to believe in Him. They will continue to partake of the Lord Jesus as the bread of life (John 6:56). They will learn from Him, grow in faith and live their lives for Him.

PERSONAL APPLICATION

1. SEEKERS

As God calls us to the Lord, let’s choose to receive Him and believe in Him. He will not cast us out.

2. BELIEVERS

Let’s be thankful to the Lord for calling us to salvation and that the Lord Jesus will specially keep us by His grace and power. Let’s deeply appreciate this assurance of salvation. None of us would be lost. Let’s respond by seeking to learn from His word and to grow in faith.
