Jeremiah
"I will make Jerusalem a heap of ruins"
Text: Jeremiah 9:11
WAILING FOR THE DESTRUCTION OF JUDAH
Jeremiah took the news of the devastation of Judah very hard. He was named “the weeping prophet” because of the frequent mention of tears in his book.
“I will take up a weeping and wailing for the mountains,
And for the dwelling places of the wilderness a lamentation,
Because they are burned up,
So that no one can pass through;
Nor can men hear the voice of the cattle.
Both the birds of the heavens and the beasts have fled;
They are gone.
I will make Jerusalem a heap of ruins, a den of jackals.
I will make the cities of Judah desolate, without an inhabitant.”
Jeremiah 9:10-11
1. “I will take up a weeping and wailing”
a) Jeremiah was a true patriot who loved his nation.
b) Lamentation was both expressed and planned.
i) Expressed
It was spontaneous sorrow.
ii) Planned
He would set aside time for mourning (and in this spirit prays for the nation).
2. Things for which Jeremiah would weep over:
a) The mountains
b) The dwelling places of the wilderness.
3. Reasons for the lamentation
a) The beautiful places were burned up.
b) No one passes through these devastated areas.
c) There was now desolation:
i) No sound of cattle lowing.
ii) No songs of birds.
d) There was nothing in these places. All have fled or had been destroyed!
4. “I will make Jerusalem a heap of ruins, a den of jackals.
I will make the cities of Judah desolate, without an inhabitant.”
a) The LORD’s Judgment stood firm.
b) The city of Jerusalem
i) It would become a heap of ruins.
ii) It would become a den of jackals.
c) The cities of Judah
i) They would become desolate.
ii) They would have no inhabitants.
I will make the cities of Judah desolate, without an inhabitant.”
