"Do not abhor us, for Your name's sake"

Text: Jeremiah 14:21

ANOTHER EMOTIVE PRAYER OF JEREMIAH

Jeremiah found himself pleading with God strongly. His prayers were deep and insightful.

“Do not abhor us, for Your name’s sake;
Do not disgrace the throne of Your glory.
Remember, do not break Your covenant with us.
Are there any among the idols of the nations that can cause rain?
Or can the heavens give showers?
Are You not He, O LORD our God?
Therefore we will wait for You,
Since You have made all these.”
Jeremiah 14:21-22

1. “Do not abhor us, for Your name’s sake”

a) Abhorrence
i) This was Jeremiah’s concern.
ii) God may chasten according to His Divine justice.
iii) But the plea was that God would not abhor His people.
b) God’s name.
i) Jeremiah was concerned about God’s name.
ii) If Judah was punished severely, His name might suffer.
c) Disgrace of the glory of God’s throne.
i) The kingdom of Judah reflected the glory of God’s throne.
ii) If Judah’s throne falls, disgrace would be brought to God’s throne.
d) Covenant of God.
i) The context is that of the throne of Judah.
ii) Thus, this is a reference to God’s covenant given to David.
iii) Jeremiah pleaded that this Covenant be not broken.
e) In reality none of the things Jeremiah prayed about would be affected!
i) God did not abhor Judah at all.
ii) God’s name would not be affected if Judah fell.
iii) There would be no disgrace to the glory of God’s throne at all.
iv) The Covenant with David had a spiritual dimension.
That Covenant would not be affected if the earthly kingdom was discontinued.
v) The Covenant with David would be fulfilled through the Messiah.

2. “Are there any among the idols of the nations that can cause rain?
Or can the heavens give showers? Are You not He, O LORD our God?”

a) Jeremiah was right when he offered this prayer.
b) Only God can bring the rain showers.
c) But this does not mean that He would answer with rain!

3. “Therefore we will wait for You, since You have made all these.”

a) This was the wisest word Jeremiah uttered.
b) Judah would have to wait on the Lord:
i) For forgiveness.
ii) For restoration.
iii) For blessings.
