My Song In The Night (Gospel of Luke)
Text: Luke 9: 61-62
ANOTHER WOULD-BE FOLLOWER
1. There was another person who wanted to follow the Lord Jesus.
2. This was what he said to the Lord.
“And another also said, ‘Lord, I will follow You, but let me first go and bid them farewell who are at my house.’”
Luke 9:61
3. What did he mean?
a. On the surface:
i. He expressed a desire to follow the Lord Jesus.
ii. He was asking permission to say goodbye to his family.
b. Beneath the surface:
i. He meant something else/
ii. He found it hard to leave all to follow the Lord.
iii. This was a polite way of saying that he was not ready to follow the Lord.
4. The reply of the Lord Jesus.
“But Jesus said to him, ‘No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.’”
Luke 9:62
a. Putting one’s hand on the plow.
i. This was an agrarian term.
ii. It is a reference to working on the field using a plow (plough).
iii. The person who plows knows that it is vital to keep his eyes on his work.
iv. If he is distracted, he will not be able to plow a straight line.
b. Looking back:
i. This was the problem with the would-be follower.
ii. His heart was divided and thus he cannot concentrate on following the Lord Jesus.
iii. His family matters so much that he cannot stay totally focused.
c. “Fit for the kingdom of God”
i. The kingdom of God is worthy of our full concentration.
ii. To look back and to long for worldly things would render us unfit to become true and faithful followers of the Lord Jesus Christ.
iii.
