SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS IV
“Whatever city you enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you. And heal the sick there, and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’”
Luke 10:8-9
1. From Homes to whole Cities
The focus of this set of instructions is on “Cities”.
a. The word “city” may also be understood as “towns” or even “villages”.
b. These cities were not large metropolis of today.
c. Some of them have only a few thousand people living there.
2. Cities that were welcoming and gracious.
a. The Disciples could be made welcome by these cities.
b. They could be well-taken care of by these kind cities.
c. The Disciples were to appreciate these good cities.
3. Their ministry remains the same:
a. Caring for the sick.
The Disciples would be empowered to heal the sick.
b. Preaching of the Gospel.
i. They must proclaim the Gospel.
ii. They must invite people to enter the Kingdom of God.
4. The Message: “The Kingdom of God has come near to you”.
a. The ability to heal the sick would demonstrate the power of the Kingdom of God.
b. The message that it “has come” must be preached with much joy.
c. They may also speak of the fact that the Lord Jesus Himself would soon come into their city.
d. The message of the Kingdom of God must be made known widely to all.
