"In the court of the Lord's house"

Text: Jeremiah 19:14

FROM TOPHET TO THE LORD’S HOUSE

Jeremiah spoke to the elders of the nation of Judah. There was no record of any positive response. The lack of response was not unexpected. The prophet then went to the court of the Lord’s house.

“Then Jeremiah came from Tophet,
where the LORD had sent him to prophesy;
and he stood in the court of the Lord’s house and said to all the people,
‘Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel:
‘Behold, I will bring on this city and on all her towns
all the doom that I have pronounced against it,
because they have stiffened their necks that they might not hear My words.””
Jeremiah 19:14-15

1. “Then Jeremiah came from Tophet, where the LORD had sent him to prophesy”

a) The audience was the leaders of Judah.
b) They were specifically mentioned:
i) Elders of the people.
ii) Elders of the priests (Jeremiah 19:1).

2. “And he stood in the court of the Lord’s house and said to all the people”

a) Jeremiah now addressed the people who had come into the house of the Lord.
b) These would be the “ordinary people”.
c) They may not have been appointed leaders, in contrast to the elders.

3. “Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘Behold, I will bring on this city and on all her towns all the doom that I have pronounced against it'”

a) Both leaders and people were blameworthy.
b) The message that Jeremiah had preached to the elders was now proclaimed to the masses.
c) God will bring doom to the city of Jerusalem.
d) This doom would extend to all the towns of Judah.

4. “Because they have stiffened their necks that they might not hear My words”

a) They had stiffened their necks
i) On purpose.
ii) With ill-intent.
b) So that they might not hear God’s words.
i) They had already decided that they did not want to hear.
ii) And if they are forced to hear they would not take heed.
