Text: Luke 13: 6-9

THE PARABLE OF THE BARREN FIG TREE

1. The Lord Jesus was a Master Story-teller, especially of Parables.

2. Features of the Parable.

a. A fig tree was planted in a vineyard.

b. The owner spoke to the keeper of the vineyard.

i. Three years of waiting.

“Look, for three years I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree and find none.”

Luke 13:7a

ii. Order to cut down the tree.

“Cut it down; why does it use up the ground?”

Luke 13:7b

c. The response of the keeper of the vineyard.

i. Plea for an extension of time.

“Sir, let it alone this year also”

Luke 13:8a

ii. More work to be done.

“Until I dig around it and fertilize it.

Luke 13:8b

iii. “If it bears fruit”

“And if it bears fruit, well.”

Luke 13:9a

iv. If it does not bear fruit.

“But if not, after that you can cut it down.”

Luke 13:9b

3. Lessons that the Lord meant to teach.

a. Fruit-bearing should be naturally forthcoming!

b. If a tree is unfruitful:

i. More time may be given to the tree.

ii. But it would not be for an indefinite period of time.

c. Israel was like that barren fig tree.

i. It had not borne fruit.

ii. More time may be given.

iii. But if it continues to be barren, the end is inevitable and expected.

d. The lessons are not limited to Israel.

i. We are to bear fruit in our life too.

ii. We cannot continue to be barren!

不结实的无花果树的比喻

b.主人对管园的说

i.等待了三年

“就对管园的说：‘看哪，我这三年来到这无花果树前找果子，竟找不着。”

ii.砍倒这棵树

“把它砍了吧，何必白占地土呢？”

c.管园的的回应

i.祈求延长时间

“管园的说：‘主啊，今年且留着”

《路加福音 13:8a》

ii.有更多工作要做

“等我周围掘开土，加上粪”

《路加福音 13:8b》

iii. 若结果子

“以后若结果子便罢”

《路加福音 13:9a》

iv. 若不结果子

“不然，再把它砍了”

《路加福音 13:9b》

3.主想要教导的教训

a.结果子应该是自然而然的！

b.如果一棵树不结果子：

i.可以给树更多的时间

ii.但不是无限期的时间

c.以色列就像这棵不结实的无花果树

i.它没有结果

ii.可以给它更多时间

iii. 但如果它继续荒芜，结局是意料之中，也是无法避免的

d.这教训不限于以色列

i.我们也要在我们的生命中结出果子

ii.我们不能继续贫瘠！
