My Song In The Night (Gospel of Luke)
Text: Luke 14: 15-24
DINNER CONVERSATION
Now when one of those who sat at the table with Him heard these things, he said to Him,
“Blessed is he who shall eat bread in the kingdom of God!”
Luke 14:15
1. In the home of one of the rulers of the Pharisees.
a. There were guests besides the family of the host.
b. One of them made what he may have thought as an astute remark.
2. The content of what he said “Blessed is he who shall eat bread in the kingdom of God!”
a. Having a meal in this home reminded him of the kingdom of God.
b. How blessed to be able to eat bread in God’s kingdom.
c. He assumed that he was already in that kingdom.
A SURPRISING PARABLE AS A RESPONSE
“Then He said to him, ‘A certain man gave a great supper and invited many, and sent his servant at supper time to say to those who were invited, ‘Come, for all things are now ready.’ But they all with one accord began to make excuses. The first said to him, ‘I have bought a piece of ground, and I must go and see it. I ask you to have me excused.’ And another said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to test them. I ask you to have me excused.’ Still another said, ‘I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.’ So that servant came and reported these things to his master. Then the master of the house, being angry, said to his servant, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in here the poor and the maimed and the lame and the blind.’ And the servant said, ‘Master, it is done as you commanded, and still there is room.’ Then the master said to the servant, ‘Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled. For I say to you that none of those men who were invited shall taste my supper.’’’
Luke 14:16-24
1. The Outline of the Parable of the Great Supper.
2. An Invitation was sent out to have Supper in his house.
3. Excuses made to decline this Invitation:
a. One had bought a piece of property. He needed to check it out.
b. Another had bought 5 oxen. He needed to test them.
c. A third said that he had just gotten married. He would not be attending the Supper.
4. The Master of the house became angry.
a. A new list of Invitees was drawn up.
b. This list would include: “The poor and the maimed and the lame and the blind” (Luke 14:21).
5. There was still room for more.
a. The servants would go out of their way.
i. To invite anybody who was interested.
ii. These would include “strangers”.
b. The Master’s house would be filled!
6. The Original Invitees
a. They would not be there at the Great Supper.
b. They had despised it and declined to respond positively.
7. The Lesson the Lord sought to emphasise:
a. They had taken for granted that they are in the Kingdom of God.
b. But many had not yet come to believe and to receive the Lord Jesus as their Saviour.
c. They would be left out in the cold if they did not address their sins!
