Text: Luke 17: 34-37
A CRYPTIC CONCLUSION
1. The teaching of the Second Coming.
a. This was a complex teaching.
b. There are many details that surround this teaching.
2. Some common problems that attend this teaching:
a. Some speculate when the Lord Jesus would return.
b. Others do not pay as much attention to this teaching.
c. Still others ask endless questions about this doctrine.
3. The Lord Jesus gave a cryptic conclusion to this teaching.
a. This was done on purpose.
b. He does not want to encourage speculation.
IMPORTANT REALISATION
“‘I tell you, in that night there will be two men in one bed: the one will be taken and the other will be left. Two women will be grinding together: the one will be taken and the other left. Two men will be in the field: the one will be taken and the other left’. And they answered and said to Him, ‘Where, Lord?’ So He said to them, ‘Wherever the body is, there the eagles will be gathered together.’”
Luke 17:34-37
1. The facts as the Lord presented them.
a. Normal activities
i. Sleeping
ii. Grinding
iii. Working in the field
b. The Return of the Lord Jesus would include a special event.
i. This event is described in 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17.
ii. Believers would be caught up to be with the Lord.
iii. This is called “Rapture”.
2. The question of the Disciples.
a. They asked “where” this event would take place.
b. The answer given was given in figurative language.
i. Where dead bodies are found.
ii. Vultures would be there.
iii. The word “eagles” can be translated “vultures”.
(Eagles do not swoop on dead bodies; but vultures will)
iv. Eagles and vultures are called “raptors”.
3. The meaning of this figure of speech.
a. The time of the Return of the Lord Jesus.
i. The world would be in great difficulties.
ii. The situation would become worse and worse.
b. The Lord would send deliverance.
i. He would rescue believers.
ii. They would be “taken up” to be with the Lord.
c. There would be some who are left behind.
d. As death occurs, so would vultures descend to feed on the corpses.
The challenge is for us to be sure of our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ!
