"I will bring back the captivity of Jacob's tents"

Text: Jeremiah 30:18

BRINGING ISRAEL BACK

Israel was languishing in Babylon. Many were discouraged. The false prophets gave empty promises. What could they look forward to in the future?

“Thus says the LORD:
‘Behold, I will bring back the captivity of Jacob’s tents,
And have mercy on his dwelling places;
The city shall be built upon its own mound,
And the palace shall remain according to its own plan.
Then out of them shall proceed thanksgiving
And the voice of those who make merry;
I will multiply them, and they shall not diminish;
I will also glorify them, and they shall not be small.'”
Jeremiah 30:18-19

1. “Thus says the LORD: ‘Behold, I will bring back the captivity of Jacob’s tents'”

a) God was aware that Israel was in captivity in a foreign land.

b) Many were refugees and were living in tents.

c) The LORD promised that He would bring them back to Israel.

2. “And have mercy on his dwelling places”

a) God would show them mercy.

b) Their plight was so bad that great mercy must be extended.

3. “The city shall be built upon its own mound, and the palace shall remain according to its own plan”

a) Israel once had a great city called Jerusalem.
The LORD can help them rebuild their city.

b) Israel also had a palace for the king to live in.
The LORD can also restore Israel.

c) The question is not whether God could do all He said.
The real question was whether Israel would walk in obedience if He brought the people back!

4. “Then out of them shall proceed thanksgiving
And the voice of those who make merry;
I will multiply them, and they shall not diminish;
I will also glorify them, and they shall not be small”

a) God would like to restore His people back to Israel.

b) He promised the following:

i) He would multiply them.

ii) Israel need not fear being diminished.

iii) He would glorify them.

iv) The nation need not fear being small.

c) The question was whether Israel would offer thanksgiving to the LORD.

i) There is no doubt as to what God can do.

ii) The doubt lies in Israel’s ability to respond appropriately in renewed faith and in thanksgiving.
