THE CHARGES MADE AGAINST THE LORD JESUS

1. The Lord Jesus Christ was brought before the Roman Governor by the Sanhedrin Council.

2. The charges against Him were:

a. Political
b. Criminal
c. Serious enough to warrant the sentence of capital punishment.

THE TRIAL BEFORE GOVERNOR PONTIUS PILATE

1. Pilate would have to determine whether those charges were indeed true.

2. He would have to use Roman law to ascertain the truth of the charges.

THE POLITICAL CHARGE MADE AGAINST THE LORD JESUS

THE CONVERSATION BETWEEN PILATE AND THE LORD JESUS

1. Pilate was not convinced by the Jewish Council members.

2. He spoke to the Lord Jesus candidly.

“Then Pilate asked Him, saying, ‘Are You the King of the Jews?’ He answered him and said, ‘It is as you say.’”

Luke 23:3

a. “Are You the King of the Jews?”
This was a serious matter if the Lord Jesus had harboured political ambitions.
b. “He answered him and said, ‘It is as you say.’”
This was not the answer that was expected.
i. The Lord Jesus showed no political interest at all.
ii. His answer showed that He was not a threat to Rome at all

PILATE ADDRESSED THE COUNCIL MEMBERS

“So Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowd, ‘I find no fault in this Man.’ But they were the more fierce, saying, ‘He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee to this place.’”

Luke 23:4-5

a. He could not find any fault in the Lord Jesus.
b. Implications:
i. The Lord be exonerated.
ii. He would be set free.

2. The rejection of this verdict by the Council.

a. They charged Him with stirring up the people.
b. His influence was very extensive.
i. He began His ministry in Galilee.
ii. That had expanded to Jerusalem.
c.The Council wanted the Governor to do the following:
i. He must be stopped.
ii. He must be executed by Rome.
