Text: Galatians 2: 9-10
MSITN VITAL DOCTRINES – SALVATION
“And when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that had been given to me, they gave me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship, that we should go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised. They desired only that we should remember the poor, the very thing which I also was eager to do.”
Galatians 2:9-10
FULL RECOGNITION OF THE MINISTRY TO THE GENTILES
1. Pillars of the Church in Jerusalem.
a. Three people were named.
b. These were apostles.
i. James, the half-brother of the Lord Jesus.
ii. Cephas, who was more popularly called “Peter”.
iii. John, who worked very closely with Peter (Acts 3:1; 4:13).
2. These apostles were highly discerning.
a. They perceived that God’s grace had been given to the Apostle Paul.
b. The evidence of the Lord’s grace in Paul’s ministry was obvious and overwhelming.
i. Miracles were performed by Paul.
ii. Many churches were founded.
iii. Many people came to faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
3. The right hand of fellowship.
a. This is an idiom.
b. What it means:
i. Acceptance
ii. Acknowledgment
iii. Honour
c. The three pillars of the Church in Jerusalem represented the Church which was predominantly Jewish.
d. They gave their right hand of fellowship to the apostles, Paul and Barnabas.
4. Two different but equal ministries.
a. James, Cephas and John would focus on developing their ministry to the Jews.
b. Paul and Barnabas would concentrate on the Gentiles.
c. Both ministries were recognized as of equal importance.
5. Remembering the poor
a. The Apostles in the Jerusalem church urged Paul and Barnabas to remember the poor.
b. This word of exhortation was also very much a concern of Paul and Barnabas.
