THE TREASURES OF LIFE

19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal;

20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.

21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

1. Treasures on earth

a. National treasures
b. Cultural treasures
c. Personal treasures
This is in mind here

2. Collecting treasures

a. Because they are of some value
b. Values:
i. Sentimental value
ii. Financial value
iii. Personal value

3. The treasures on earth

a. They can be destroyed
i. By moth
ii. By rust
b. They can be stolen
i. Thieves
ii. Robbers
iii. They can break into a house and steal the treasures

4. Treasures in heaven

a. No moth
b. No rust
c. No thieves

5. What are these treasures?

a. This was not elaborated upon
b. But Treasures always involve the heart
c. Where the heart is, there the treasures would be found

6. Examples of the earthly treasures people have given to the LORD

a. In the building of the Tabernacle/ Temple

i. The people gave of their earthly treasures
Exodus 25
ii. In the building of the Temple
1 Chronicles 28-29
b. The focus:
i. The LORD Himself is our inheritance Psalm 16:5
ii. The relationship with God is treasured

7. Example of people who cannot give up earthly treasures for the LORD

a. The rich young ruler for he had great possessions Matthew 19:22
b. Demas who was once a companion of Paul 2 Timothy 4:10a

CONCLUSION

1. Re-think the Treasures of our heart

a. Earthly treasures
b. Heavenly treasures

2. Guard the heart carefully

a. If the treasures are good and eternal
b) If the treasures are carnal and earthbound
c) The heart will affect many things:
i) Our attention
ii) Our affection
