Text: Galatians 4: 23-24

MSITN VITAL DOCTRINES – SALVATION

“But he who was of the bondwoman was born according to the flesh, and he of the freewoman through promise, which things are symbolic. For these are the two covenants: the one from Mount Sinai which gives birth to bondage, which is Hagar—”

Galatians 4:23-24

THEOLOGICAL SYMBOLS

1. Understanding the symbol of Hagar.

a. Hagar was a slave (a bondwoman).
b. Technically, the son born of a bondwoman is also a slave.
c. Ishmael was born “according to the flesh”.
i. He was the natural offspring of the union between Abraham and Hagar.
ii. No special spiritual significance may be intimated.

2. Understanding the symbol of Sarah.

a. Sarah was a freewoman.
b. She and Abraham were promised a son by the LORD.
c. Isaac was the son of promise.
i. He was the heir of Abraham.
ii. There was special spiritual significance in his sonship.

THE COVENANT CONCEPT

1. Paul expanded his theological teaching.

2. The idea of a Covenant was the focus here.

3. God gave to Abraham a Covenant.

a. This Covenant was sealed with a sacrifice (Genesis 15).
b. God Himself would establish this Covenant (Genesis 17).

4. Abraham asked which son would be his heir.

a. Ishmael would not be the heir (Genesis 17:18).
b. Isaac would be the heir (Genesis 17:19).
c. The covenant with Isaac would be an everlasting one (Genesis 17:21).

ELABORATION ON THE SINAI COVENANT

1. There was a covenant that God gave to Israel through Moses (Exodus 24).

2. Many had not correctly understood this Sinai Covenant.

3. Paul sought to explain about the Sinai Covenant here.

4. His statement was a startling one to many Jews.

a. Mount Sinai was compared to Hagar.
b. It gives birth to bondage.
c. Just as Hagar’s offspring would be in bondage.

5. The application was sombre.

a. Those who keep the law would end up being in bondage.
b. This word of warning had to be sounded out, loud and clear!
