INTRODUCTION
1. Plans were made immediately to go to Egypt
2. There was renewed vigour and excitement
THE WORSHIP AT BEERSHEBA
So Israel took his journey with all that he had, and came to Beersheba, and offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac.
Genesis 46:1
1. Israel’s journey to Egypt
a) He took with him all that he had
b) He came to Beersheba
2. Worship of the LORD
a) This had not been done for a long time
b) This was resumed with the revival of Jacob’s spirit
c) God was called “The God of his father Isaac”
GOD SPEAKS TO JACOB AGAIN
2 Then God spoke to Israel in the visions of the night, and said, “Jacob, Jacob!”
And he said, “Here I am.”
3 So He said, “I am God, the God of your father; do not fear to go down to Egypt, for I will make of you a great nation there.
4 I will go down with you to Egypt, and I will also surely bring you up again; and Joseph will put his hand on your eyes.”Genesis 46:2-4
1. God addresses Israel
Then God spoke to Israel in the visions of the night, and said, “Jacob, Jacob!”
Genesis 46:2a
a) God addressed him as “Jacob”
b) But God was gracious and kind
2. Jacob’s response
And he said, “Here I am.”
Genesis 46:2b
a) Attentive
b) Humble
GOD’S WORD TO JACOB
3 So He said, “I am God, the God of your father; do not fear to go down to Egypt, for I will make of you a great nation there.
4 I will go down with you to Egypt, and I will also surely bring you up again; and Joseph will put his hand on your eyes.”Genesis 46:3-4
1. Re-introduction
a) “I am God”
b) “The God of your father”
2. Re-assurance
a) Do not fear to go down to Egypt
i) Abraham was forbidden to remain in Egypt
ii) Isaac was forbidden to go to Egypt
iii) But Jacob was encouraged to go to Egypt
b) For I will make of you a great nation there
i) A great nation would arise
ii) This was partial fulfilment of a prophecy given to Abraham
(Genesis 15:12-16)
12 Now when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and behold, horror and great darkness fell upon him. 13 Then He said to Abram: “Know certainly that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, and will serve them, and they will afflict them four hundred years. 14 And also the nation whom they serve I will judge; afterward they shall come out with great possessions.
