Text: Galatians 4: 30-31

MSITN VITAL DOCTRINES – SALVATION

“Nevertheless what does the Scripture say? ‘Cast out the bondwoman and her son, for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.’ So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman but of the free.’”

Galatians 4:30-31

CITING THE SCRIPTURES

1. Paul made sure that he cited the Scriptures:

a. For knowledge.
b. For authority.

2. What he had written was not:

a. His personal viewpoint.
b. Not vindictive statements against the false teachers.

3. Casting out the bondwoman and her son.

a. Historically, this was a reference to Hagar and Ishmael.
b. This was a demand made by Sarah to Abraham (Genesis 21:10).
c. Abraham was displeased at this demand (Genesis 21:11).
d. The LORD then spoke to Abraham on this matter.

“But God said to Abraham, ‘Do not let it be displeasing in your sight because of the lad or because of your bondwoman. Whatever Sarah has said to you, listen to her voice; for in Isaac your seed shall be called.’”

Genesis 21:12

i. God urged Abraham to put away his displeasure.
ii. It was a fact that in Isaac, the seed of Abraham would be found.
e. Ishmael would not be a co-heir with Isaac.

4. Children of the freewoman.

a. This truth was emphasised yet again.
b. The seed of Abraham:
i. It is in the line of Isaac.
ii. It is in Sarah and not in Hagar, the bondwoman.
iii. That Seed of Abraham was the Lord Jesus Christ.
iv. It is through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, that believers become children of the freewoman.
