HOSANNA TO THE SON OF THE HIGHEST
Text: Matthew 21
2 April 2023
PALM SUNDAY
Today is celebrated as “Palm Sunday.” It commemorates the Triumphal Entry of the Lord Jesus Christ into Jerusalem. The Lord Jesus rode on a foal of a donkey.
AN ANCIENT PROPHECY
Matthew cited an ancient prophecy written by the prophet Zechariah.
4 All this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying:
5 “Tell the daughter of Zion,
‘Behold, your King is coming to you,
Lowly, and sitting on a donkey,
A colt, the foal of a donkey.’ ” Matthew 21:4-5
- Prophecy of the coming of the King of Israel
- The symbolic significance:
a) The King will not be sitting on a war horse
b) He will be sitting on the foal of a donkey
i) Humility
ii) Hard work
iii) Peace
iv) Gentleness
THE FULFILMENT OF PROPHECY
The Lord Jesus came to fulfil this prophecy, in an amazing way.
- He was indeed the “King of the Jews” as the Wise Men understood Him
- But He came as “The Son of Man” in greatest humility
- He worked hard and humbly
- He was gentle and gracious to all to whom He ministered
RECEPTION OF THE LORD JESUS
The multitudes acclaimed Him and received Him with jubilation.
8 And a very great multitude spread their clothes on the road; others cut down branches from the trees and spread them on the road.
9 Then the multitudes who went before and those who followed cried out, saying:
“Hosanna to the Son of David!
‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’
Hosanna in the highest!” Matthew 21:8-9
- The multitudes sang to the Lord
- They blessed Him for coming in the name of the LORD
- They cried out to Him in joyous praise
How do we regard the Lord Jesus? Do we honour and praise Him as He deserves?
