Text: Colossians 3: 22-25

MSITN VITAL DOCTRINES – CHRISTOLOGY

“Bondservants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh, not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but in sincerity of heart, fearing God. And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ. But he who does wrong will be repaid for what he has done, and there is no partiality.”

Colossians 3:22-25

SLAVERY IN THE DAYS OF ANCIENT ROME

1. Rome ruled its empire with an iron fist.

2. The Romans made slaves of the people they conquered.

3. These slave were sold in the market place.

4. Those who were rich could afford to have a number of slaves in their household.

ADMONITION GIVEN TO ALL CHRISTIAN SLAVES

1. Yes! There were slaves who became believers!

2. How should they live out their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ?

3. Paul addressed the manner of service for all Christian slaves.

a. Obedience
They must choose to obey their earthly masters.
b. The kind of Service to be rendered.
i. Not with eye-service.
ii. Not as men-pleasers.
iii. But serving genuinely with the heart.
iv. In their hearts they must fear God.
v. All work must be done heartily as to the Lord.

THE REASONING OF THE APOSTLE PAUL

1. They must bear in mind that they are ultimately serving the Lord.

2. If they serve faithfully, they will receive a divine award.

3. They will receive an inheritance from the Lord, no less!

FAILURE TO SERVE FAITHFULLY

1. If Christian slaves serve unfaithfully, they would obtain the due recompense.

a. They may be chastised by their earthly masters.
b. They may also be corrected by the Lord Himself personally.

2. There is no partiality with the Lord.

a. The slave must not think that he would get special favours from God.
b. The Lord will not show partiality (favouritism) even if he is a believer.

“你们做仆人的，要凡事听从你们肉身的主人；不要只在眼前侍奉，像是讨人喜欢的，总要存心诚实敬畏主。 无论做什么，都要从心里做，像是给主做的，不是给人做的。 因你们知道，从主那里必得着基业为赏赐，你们所侍奉的乃是主基督。 那行不义的必受不义的报应，主并不偏待人。”

罗马时代的奴隶制

要听从世上的主人

b. 侍奉的样式

i. 不要只在眼前侍奉

ii. 不为讨人喜欢

iii. 要存心诚实

iv. 敬畏主

v. 凡事从心里做，为主做

使徒保罗的思路

1. 他们必须记得他们所侍奉的是主基督

2. 若他们诚心侍奉，他们必得赏赐

3. 他们会得着主的基业

不义的侍奉

1. 行不义的仆人必受不义的报应

a. 他们可能被世上的主人责骂

b. 他们也会受到主耶稣的纠正

2. 主并不偏待人

a. 仆人不能以为自己会得到优待

b. 主并不会偏心对待信徒
