Text: Colossians 4: 7-9
MSITN VITAL DOCTRINES – CHRISTOLOGY
“Tychicus, a beloved brother, faithful minister, and fellow servant in the Lord, will tell you all the news about me. I am sending him to you for this very purpose, that he may know your circumstances and comfort your hearts, with Onesimus, a faithful and beloved brother, who is one of you. They will make known to you all things which are happening here.”
Colossians 4:7-9
A LIST OF CLOSE FRIENDS OF THE APOSTLE PAUL I
1. In the closing verses of Paul’s epistle to the Colossians, a number of his friends were mentioned.
2. Paul must have been a wonderful friend to know. What a privilege it is to be blessed with good friends!
TYCHICUS
1. Three things were highlighted about this man called Tychicus.
a. He was called “a beloved brother”.
i. The word “brother” does not mean one who is biologically related.
ii. This term describes a fellow-believer.
iii. It also describes a person who is a very good and close friend.
iv. Paul expressed love for this wonderfully close friend whom he regarded as a brother who is dearly loved.
b. He was well-regarded as “a faithful minister”.
i. Paul was a good and faithful servant of the Lord.
ii. Those who laboured with him would note that he worked very hard in all that he did.
iii. Paul praised Tychicus for being a “faithful servant” (minister).
c. He was also called “a fellow servant in the Lord”.
i. Tychicus worked alongside Paul in some areas of ministry.
ii. He was respected as a “fellow-servant”.
iii. Both served the Lord Jesus humbly and in harmony.
iv. Paul graciously acknowledged Tychicus for his friendship and ministry.
2. Tychicus was sent by the Apostle Paul.
a. Paul was a greatly respected Apostle.
b. Tychicus was not an apostle but was a great supporter.
c. Paul entrusted Tychicus with the task of ministering to the Colossians.
i. He would tell the Colossians more about faith in the Lord.
ii. He would first learn more about the Colossians.
iii. He would also attempt to comfort their hearts along the way.
ONESIMUS
1. Paul mentioned Onesimus in his personal letter to a good friend called Philemon.
a. Onesimus was once a slave of Philemon.
b. He had run away but met with the Apostle Paul.
c. Onesimus’ life was dramatically changed after he found faith and salvation in the Lord Jesus Christ.
2. Onesimus was from the city of Colosse.
a. Paul called him “a faithful and beloved brother”.
b. Obviously, he drew close enough for Paul to commend him so highly:
i. As a faithful brother.
ii. As a beloved brother.
c. In time to come, Paul would acknowledge Onesimus as a son (Philemon 10).
A JOINT MINISTRY
1. Paul was sending both Tychicus and Onesimus on the same ministry.
2. They would explain to the Colossians the ministry they were engaged in with the Apostle Paul.
