"Woe to you who plunder"

Text: Isaiah 33:1

A WARNING OF “WOE”

The Assyrians were on the march to conquer Israel and other nations in the vicinity. To the mighty Assyrians, the LORD gave this word of warning.

“Woe to you who plunder, though you have not been plundered;
And you who deal treacherously, though they have not dealt treacherously with you!
When you cease plundering,
You will be plundered;
When you make an end of dealing treacherously,
They will deal treacherously with you.”
Isaiah 33:1

1. The Assyrians described.

a) They were plundering and pillaging wherever they conquered.

b) They were treacherous in their dealings.

c) King Ahaz of Judah once asked the Assyrians to help his kingdom against Syria.

d) Assyria was once an ally of Judah but the nation was noted for its treachery.

e) Judah was soon threatened by Assyria.

2. The word of warning given by Isaiah the prophet concerning Assyria.

a) One day, Assyria would be plundered.

b) In time to come, Assyria would be dealt with treacherously.

c) Babylon was once a city ruled by the Assyrians.

d) Babylon would rise up one day treacherously and destroy the Assyrian empire.

3. The deeds of the Assyrians.

a) They did many wicked things against their enemies.

b) They would one day experience retribution for their wickedness.

c) This prophetic word of warning was fulfilled
when the Babylonian ascended in power to overthrow the Assyrians.
