"Come near, you nations, to hear"

Text: Isaiah 34:1

A SOLEMN PROPHETIC WORD FROM GOD

This prophecy of Isaiah has implications beyond the Assyrian threat against Judah. This prophetic word has future reference to the world at large.

“Come near, you nations, to hear;
And heed, you people!
Let the earth hear, and all that is in it,
The world and all things that come forth from it.
For the indignation of the LORD is against all nations,
And His fury against all their armies;
He has utterly destroyed them,
He has given them over to the slaughter.”
Isaiah 34:1-2

1. All the nations of the world.

a) The following words must be noted:

i) “Nations”

ii) “The earth”

iii) “The world”

b) This was a solemn word from God.

i) This message is for the whole world to hear and to give heed.

ii) The implications are very significant.

2. A stern word of warning from the LORD.

a) The context is that of God’s judgment.

b) He expresses His:

i) Indignation against the nations of the earth.

ii) Fury against a very sinful world and all its armies.

c) The world has seen many wars with millions of people killed

d) Destruction is forewarned.

i) The LORD warns of slaughter.

ii) Destruction seems to be in the mind of powerful nations against weaker ones.

iii) This chapter forewarns a global conflict that will see many slaughtered.
