"I am the LORD, that is My name"

Text: Isaiah 42:8

THE GLORY OF GOD’S NAME

The very nature of God is full of glory. His person and His works reflect His glory. No idols would ever be able to reflect His glory.

“To open blind eyes,
To bring out prisoners from the prison,
Those who sit in darkness from the prison house.
I am the LORD, that is My name;
And My glory I will not give to another,
Nor My praise to carved images.
Behold, the former things have come to pass,
And new things I declare;
Before they spring forth I tell you of them.”
Isaiah 42:7-9

1. The mighty deeds of the Messiah.

a) He would open blind eyes.

i) He would literally restore sight to the blind.

ii) He would open the spiritual eyes of those who believe in Him.

b) Many were bound in the prison of sin.

i) The Lord Jesus did not have an actual prison ministry.

ii) But He came preaching liberty to all bound in sin.

iii) Life in a prison was filled with darkness (literally).

iv) When one is bound in sin, darkness prevailed.

v) The Messiah would bring light to prisoners through the Gospel.

2. The name of GOD.

a) He is the LORD.

b) There is glory intrinsically bound to His name.

c) That glory would never be given to an idol.

d) That glory would be shared with the Messiah:

i) In His person.

ii) In His life.

iii) In His works and ministry.

3. Declaring things before they come to pass.

a) This was the challenge God gave to the idol makers and idols (Isaiah 41:21-24).

b) God was fulfilling His own challenging word.

i) He was foretelling what He would do.

ii) He was foretelling what He would do through the Messiah.

c) The Messiah

i) He would be identified by all that He would do.

ii) He would fulfil all that He had been sent to do.

iii) Thus, Israel may know that God had sent His true Messiah.

iv) Gentiles may rejoice in the fact that they would know the Messiah.

v) They can enter into the light of His kingdom as His people.
