"Who is blind but My servant"

Text: Isaiah 42:18

A DEEP LAMENT

The LORD sorrowed deeply over Israel’s folly and sinfulness. The nation was called to be “a servant of the LORD”. That title held great honour, but Israel had thrown away the privilege of serving God!

“Hear, you deaf;
And look, you blind, that you may see.
Who is blind but My servant,
Or deaf as My messenger whom I send?
Who is blind as he who is perfect,
And blind as the LORD’s servant?
Seeing many things, but you do not observe;
Opening the ears, but he does not hear.”
Isaiah 42:18-20

1. Israel had become:

a) A deaf servant.

b) A blind servant.

c) What can a blind and deaf servant offer to God as his service?

d) Yet Israel thought of itself as “perfect” without realising its sinful state.

2. What Israel needed to do.

a) To be healed of its deafness.

b) To have blindness healed.

c) In the miracles the Messiah would perform.

i) He caused the deaf to hear.

ii) And He caused the blind to see.

iii) Israel needed to be healed of deafness and blindness.

iv) And only the LORD could do this.

d) When the Lord healed the sick.

i) He would sometimes add, “See that you tell no one”.

ii) But after the people were healed, they ignored the word of the Lord.

e) The Lord revealed many things to the multitudes.

i) They see many things but do not observe.

ii) The ears were opened but they were still not hearing.

iii) This was a prophecy and it was fulfilled in the days of the Lord Jesus.
