"And I was not rebellious"

Text: Isaiah 50:5

EXEMPLARY RESPONSE TO GOD

The LORD’s part is clear and vital. He will reveal and He will teach the Messiah. The Messiah in turn must make the appropriate response!

“The Lord GOD has opened My ear;
And I was not rebellious,
Nor did I turn away.
I gave My back to those who struck Me,
And My cheeks to those who plucked out the beard;
I did not hide My face from shame and spitting.”
Isaiah 50:5-6

1. Opening of the ear.

a) To hear.

b) To heed.

c) To obey.

d) The Messiah’s ear was opened indeed!

2. The response of the Messiah was nothing less than exemplary.

a) I was not rebellious.

i) Rebellion was Israel’s response.

ii) Rebellion is compared to the sin of witchcraft (1 Samuel 15:23).

b) Nor did I turn away.

i) The Messiah never turned His back on the LORD.

ii) No matter how hard the task, He did not flinch in the slightest.

3. Great suffering of the Messiah.

a) In His trial before Pontius Pilate, the Messiah’s back was severely beaten.

b) Great insult and injury were inflicted in the pulling of the beard.

c) Great shame was endured.

d) Some even spat on the Messiah!

The Messiah was exemplary in His obedience to the LORD in every way!
