Text: Exodus 18:1-12
Title: “Now I know that the LORD is greater than all the gods” Exodus 18:11

INTRODUCTION

1. Moses in Egypt

a) He went to Egypt alone

b) His wife and his two sons remained in Midian

2. Jethro visited Moses

a) He brought his daughter, Zipporah

b) He also brought his two grandchildren with him

THE VISIT

1And Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses’ father-in-law, heard of all that God had done for Moses and for Israel His people—that the LORD had brought Israel out of Egypt.

2 Then Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, took Zipporah, Moses’ wife, after he had sent her back,

3 with her two sons, of whom the name of one was Gershom (for he said, “I have been a stranger in a foreign land”)

4 and the name of the other was Eliezer (for he said, “The God of my father was my help, and delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh”);

5 and Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, came with his sons and his wife to Moses in the wilderness, where he was encamped at the mountain of God.

6 Now he had said to Moses, “I, your father-in-law Jethro, am coming to you with your wife and her two sons with her.”

Exodus 18:1-6

1. Jethro

a) He was a priest of Midian

b) He was the father-in-law of Moses

2. Reconciliation

a) Moses had sent Zipporah back to her father

b) She went with her two sons

c) Jethro sought to reconcile the family

3. The sons of Moses

a) Gershom (A stranger)

b) Eliezer (God is my help)

4. The family was reconciled

THE TESTIMONY OF MOSES

7 So Moses went out to meet his father-in-law, bowed down, and kissed him. And they asked each other about their well-being, and they went into the tent.

8 And Moses told his father-in-law all that the LORD had done to Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel’s sake, all the hardship that had come upon them on the way, and how the LORD had delivered them

Exodus 18:7-8

1. The Respectful attitude of Moses

a) Bowed down

b) Kissed his father-in-law

c) Exchange of greetings

2. Moses’ sharing of what God had done

a) What God had done to Pharaoh

b) What God had done to Egypt

c) What God had done for Israel

d) The hardship that Israel had experienced in the wilderness

e) How the LORD had delivered them

THE RESPONSE OF JETHRO

10 And Jethro said, “Blessed be the LORD, who has delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians and out of the hand of Pharaoh, and who has delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians.

11 Now I know that the LORD is greater than all the gods; for in the very thing in which they behaved proudly, He was above them.”

12 Then Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, took a burnt offering and other sacrifices to offer to God. And Aaron came with all the elders of Israel to eat bread with Moses’ father-in-law before God.

Exodus 18:10-12

1. Jethro’s Exclamation
“Blessed be the LORD”

2. Recognition of all that God had done

a) Deliverance from Pharaoh and the Egyptians

b) The LORD is greater than all the gods of Egypt

c) He was above all the gods of Egypt

3. Profession of faith

a) “Now I know”

b) “That the LORD is greater than all the gods”

4. The worship of the LORD

a) A burnt offering

b) Other sacrifices

c) All offered to the LORD as an expression of faith

OUR CHALLENGE

1. To bear witness of our faith in God

a) Declare what the LORD has done

b) Speak of personal faith

2. Be open to what the LORD can do

a) To touch a heart

b) To help someone come to faith

3. Worship and Fellowship

May the centre be the LORD Himself
