Servants Of The Lord

The challenge to be good servants of the Lord

The Songs of Ascents were not just about looking up to the Lord…seeking His deliverance. They were also about how Israel ought to live and serve the Lord. The Lord stated clearly what was required of them, “And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways and to love Him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to keep the commandments of the Lord and His statutes which I command you today for your good?” (Deuteronomy 10:12,13) One essential requirement is to serve the Lord with all their heart and with all their soul. The servant of the Lord must serve with joy in his heart and not grudgingly (Deuteronomy 28:47). Let us be challenged to become better servants of the Lord.

1. The eyes of the servant

“Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their masters, as the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the Lord our God, until He has mercy on us.” (Psalm 123:2)

  1. The Psalmist was challenged to look up to the Lord as His servant.
  2. Good servants are always alert and sensitive to the bidding of the master.
  3. They do not need the master to tell them what to do.
  4. They know exactly what needs to be done and they take the initiative to do them.
  5. This is how we ought to serve the Lord.
  6. We should be sensitive to the Lord’s bidding, always asking what else we can do for Him.
  7. We serve Him out of a heart of love and concern for the Lord, and not out of duty.
  8. As we serve, we wait upon the Lord for His help and mercy.

Let us be challenged to always look to the hand of the Lord lovingly, humbly and faithfully.

2. The example of David as His servant

  1. David is a wonderful inspiration as a servant of the Lord (Psalm 132:10).
  2. He had a tremendous love for the Lord and His house.
  3. David expressed his love and concern for the ark of the Lord.
    • He was deeply troubled that the ark of the Lord did not have a dwelling place (Psalm 132:3–5).
    • He vowed to find the lost ark, which he did and sought to provide a resting place for it.
  4. God also made a covenant with David concerning his throne and descendants.
    • If they kept the Davidic covenant, their throne would not end (Psalm 132:11–13).
    • David sought to keep this covenant with love and affection.
  5. David would not have the privilege of building the temple…the privilege was given to Solomon.
  6. But he would make great offerings to supply everything needed for the building project. Let us be instructed and inspired by David’s example to love the Lord and Bethany.

3. The exhortation to bless the Lord as His servant

“Behold, bless the Lord, all you servants of the Lord, who by night stand in the house of the Lord!” (Psalm 134:1)

As servants of the Lord, there is no greater joy than being in His house. It is not just to serve the Lord but also to bless His name. The Lord has incredibly blessed us in more ways than one, individually and as a church. Our appropriateresponse is to be faithful to the Lord as His servant, no matter our challenges. Let us ensure that there will always be a continuous flow of praise to the Lord and blessings from “Zion”. Let us be challenged to do our utmost to be good and faithful servants of the Lord.
