PETER’S MESSAGE

1. Correction   (Acts 2:14-21)

a) He had to correct a misconception the people had
b) They were not drunk
c) But they had witnessed the outpouring of the Holy Spirit

2. Presentation of the Lord Jesus Christ   (Acts 2:22-36)

a) Attested by God to them
b) Death
c) Resurrection
d) Ascension
e) Lordship and Messiahship

THE RESPONSE OF THE PEOPLE

1. They had been convicted   (Acts 2:37)

a) They heard Peter’s message
b) They were cut to the heart
c) They queried Peter and the rest of the apostles concerning how they ought to respond

2. Peter’s reply   (Acts 2:38-39)

a) He encouraged them
i. To repent
ii. To be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins
iii. To look forward to receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit
iv. This was promised to as many as the Lord will call
b) He testified and exhorted them to be saved from this perverse generation   (Acts 2:40)

3. The response of those who gladly received Peter’s word   (Acts 2:41)

a) They were baptized
b) That day about three thousand souls were added to them

THE PRACTICE OF FAITH BY THIS COMMUNITY OF BELIEVERS

And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers. Then fear came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles. Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common, and sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had need. So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, praising God and having favor with all the people.   Acts 2:42-47a

1. Features which made the church outstanding

a) Apostles’ doctrine
b) Fellowship
c) Breaking of bread
d) Prayers
e) Fear of God
f) Wonders and signs done through the apostles
g) Togetherness
h) Meeting of needs
i) Gladness and simplicity of heart
j) Praising God
k) Having favour with all the people

2. These features continued to be a part of the church

a) They continued steadfastly in these things
b) They continued daily with one accord

THE INVOLVEMENT OF THE LORD IN THE GROWTH OF THE CHURCH

And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.   Acts 2:47b

1. The Lord Jesus was at work in the early church

2. He is involved in the building of His church   (cf. Matthew 16:17-19)

3. He is involved in the lives of those who are being saved

CONCLUSION

1. We can be assured that the kingdom of God has been growing and will continue to grow

2. The church must grow too

3. Who is involved in helping the church to grow?

a) The Spirit of God
b) The Lord Jesus
c) The servants of God
d) The people of God
