THE TEN COMMANDMENTS (PART 2)
Exodus 20:12-17
INTRODUCTION
1. The first four commandments
a. You shall have no other gods
b. You shall not make for yourself a carved image
c. You shall not take the name of God in vain
d. Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy
2. They are concerning relating to God
3. The laws of God
a. They are corrective
b. They are to be complied with
SEEING THE COMMANDMENTS OF GOD AS PROHIBITIONS
12 “Honour your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the LORD your God is giving you.
13 “You shall not murder.
14 “You shall not commit adultery.
15 “You shall not steal.
16 “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbour.
17 “You shall not covet your neighbour’s house; you shall not covet your neighbour’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbour’s.”Exodus 20:12-17
1. The other six commandments

THE PURPOSE OF THE COMMANDMENTS IS THE PREVENTION OF SIN
1. The prevention of sin
a. Prohibitions are meant to prevent sin
b. There are the grave problems of sin and evil within our hearts
c. We are not to sin against God and against people
2. Prevention of sin in society
a. Society
i. To prevent injustice in the land
ii. To prevent discord in society
b. Family
i. To prevent conflict in the family
ii. To prevent disintegration in the family
PERSONAL ADHERENCE TO THE COMMANDMENTS
1. The “If” and “Then” clause“
“Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be a special treasure to Me above all people…”
Exodus 19:5
