"Their rims were full of eyes"
Text: Ezekiel 1:18
THE RIMS OF THE WHEELS
Chariots were the most significant weapons of war in the ancient days. Mighty empires made use of their powerful chariots. God gave to Ezekiel a vision of the divine chariot-throne.
“When they moved, they went toward any one of four directions;
they did not turn aside when they went.
As for their rims, they were so high they were awesome;
and their rims were full of eyes, all around the four of them.”
Ezekiel 1:17-18
1. Mobility of the chariots
a) Mobility was an essential feature of mighty chariots.
b) Most chariots were quite limited with reference to its ability to change direction.
2. The Divine Chariot
a) The chariot could move in four directions.
b) That would make it a truly remarkable vehicle.
3. Sturdy wheels
a) The wheels were strong and steady.
b) They were not wobbly in any way.
c) The wheels did not turn aside when they were moving.
d) Bad wheels were not uncommon for all chariots, resulting in poor mobility.
4. The rims of the wheels
a) They were very high rims.
b) The Divine chariot was thus huge in size.
c) They were so high they were awesome.
5. Eyes of the rims
a) The rims had “eyes”.
b) All the wheels had “eyes”.
c) The symbolic reference to “eyes”:
i) To signify intelligence.
ii) To symbolise wisdom.
iii) Most chariots were just “dead vehicles”.
iv) The divine chariot was “alive”.
