Goals for our life

As we face the different challenges of life and work, we recognise the need to make good and wise decisions. One problem is that we lack the wisdom to make these decisions. How can we find greater wisdom? One way is to pray for wisdom from God with faith (James 1:5,6). Another is to diligently search for wisdom. Solomon, who wrote Proverbs, set out several goals that we need to pursue to find greater wisdom. Goals are vital as they set our life’s direction and become a driving force for us. What are some of these goals?

Goals in search of wisdom

1. To know

“To know wisdom and instruction,” (Proverbs 1:2)

  1. The first goal is to increase our knowledge and wisdom.
  2. We are able to know as we are taught wise teachings as instruction.
  3. This is how we may derive wisdom and think more wisely rather than foolishly.

2. To perceive

“To perceive the words of understanding,” (Proverbs 1:2)

  1. Another goal is to perceive or discern things well.
  2. We want to discern words that are full of understanding.
  3. Our wisdom will be filled with good insights and a depth of understanding.

3. To receive

“To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, judgment and equity;” (Proverbs 1:3)

  1. a. Yet, another goal is to receive wise instructions concerning specific areas of life.
  2. Here is the application of wisdom concerning justice, judgment and equity.
  3. This will give us the wisdom to know how to make good and fair judgment.

4. To grow

“To give prudence to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion–” (Proverbs 1:4)

  1. In seeking wisdom, another goal is to grow into a man of wisdom.
  2. Those who are simple-minded can become prudent.
  3. The young men, who are inexperienced, can grow in knowledge and discretion.
  4. All can grow significantly to become a wise man.

Encouragement to learn to be a wise man

  1. A wise man will always seek to hear carefully and diligently: “A wise man will hear…” (Proverbs 1:5)
  2. He would have a teachable spirit…a growth mindset in learning: “And increase learning,” (Proverbs 1:5)
  3. A wise man seeks not only to have understanding but to also be a man of understanding…seeking wise counsel from others: “And a man of understanding will attain wise counsel,” (Proverbs 1:5)
  4. He seeks to understand the knowledge that is hidden and not easily attained: “To understand a proverb and an enigma, the words of the wise and their riddles.” (Proverbs 1:6)

Let us be challenged to set vital goals in our lives in our search for greater wisdom and be encouraged to become a man of wisdom and understanding.
