INTRODUCTION

1. Remarkable statements made by the Lord Jesus

a) “For assuredly, I say to you”   (Matthew 5:18 NKJV)
i) “Verily, verily” KJV
ii) “Truly” NRSV
b) “You have heard”
“But I say to you”   (Matthew 5:21-22; 27-28)

2. Recognised authority

28 And so it was, when Jesus had ended these sayings, that the people were astonished at His teaching,
29 for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.
Matthew 7:28-29
a) The Multitudes (“the people”)
b) They were astonished at the authority the Lord Jesus taught with

ALLAYING CONCERNS ABOUT THE TEACHING OF THE LORD JESUS

17 “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill.

18 For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.

19 Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

Matthew 5:17-19

1. Concern that the Lord Jesus had come “to destroy the law or the prophets”

a) This concern was noted
b) Assurance was given that the Lord had no such intentions or plans

2. Commitment of the Lord Jesus

a) To fulfil the law and the prophets
b) This was His very clear focus

3. Correct comprehension of the law of God

a) The law must be fulfilled
b) To break the law is to be called the least in the kingdom of God

ASCERTAINING THE STRENGTH OF THE WORD OF THE LORD JESUS

16 When evening had come, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed. And He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick,

17 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying:
“He Himself took our infirmities
And bore our sicknesses.”

Matthew 8:16-17

1. The demon-possessed

a) They were brought to the Lord Jesus
b) The Lord cast the demons out “with a word”

2. Those who were sick

a) He healed all who came to Him
b) Thus, He fulfilled what Isaiah prophesied
c) “He Himself took our infirmities and bore our sicknesses.”   (Isaiah 53:4)

ASSURING WORDS OF THE LORD JESUS

32 “Now learn this parable from the fig tree: When its branch has already become tender and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near.

33 So you also, when you see all these things, know that it is near—at the doors!

34 Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place.

35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.

Matthew 24:32-35

1. The Parable of the Fig Tree

a) When the branch is tender
b) When leaves start appearing
c) Summer is near

2. When the signs the Lord Jesus spoke about

a) “It is near”
b) “At the doors”

3. Heaven and earth

a) We trust that they will last
b) We cannot imagine them failing in any way
c) But they can fail

4. The word of the Lord Jesus

a) His word will never pass away
b) His word would outlast the existence of heaven and earth!

CONCLUSION

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

Colossians 3:16

1. The word of the Lord Jesus Christ

a) May it dwell within us richly
b) And in all wisdom

2. The Impact of the Lord’s word

a) Let it teach and admonish one anther
b) Let it inspire us
i) In Psalms
ii) In Hymns
iii) In spiritual songs
iv) Singing with grace in the heart to the Lord
