Title: “The skin of Moses shone”

Text: Exodus 34:27-35

INTRODUCTION

27 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Write these words, for according to the tenor of these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel.”

28 So he was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he neither ate bread nor drank water. And He wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the Ten Commandments.

29 Now it was so, when Moses came down from Mount Sinai (and the two tablets of the Testimony were in Moses’ hand when he came down from the mountain), that Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone while he talked with Him.

30 So when Aaron and all the children of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face shone, and they were afraid to come near him.

31 Then Moses called to them, and Aaron and all the rulers of the congregation returned to him; and Moses talked with them.

32 Afterward all the children of Israel came near, and he gave them as commandments all that the LORD had spoken with him on Mount Sinai.

33 And when Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a veil on his face.

34 But whenever Moses went in before the LORD to speak with Him, he would take the veil off until he came out; and he would come out and speak to the children of Israel whatever he had been commanded.

35 And whenever the children of Israel saw the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses’ face shone, then Moses would put the veil on his face again, until he went in to speak with Him.

Exodus 34:29-35

A VERY SPECIAL CONTEXT

1. Moses was specially invited to be in the Presence of God on Mount Sinai

1And the LORD said to Moses, “Cut two tablets of stone like the first ones, and I will write on these tablets the words that were on the first tablets which you broke.

2 So be ready in the morning, and come up in the morning to Mount Sinai, and present yourself to Me there on the top of the mountain.

3 And no man shall come up with you, and let no man be seen throughout all the mountain; let neither flocks nor herds feed before that mountain.”

Exodus 34:1-3

2. The duration of this meeting

So he was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he neither ate bread nor drank water.

Exodus 34:28

a) 40 days and 40 nights
b) He neither ate nor drank
c) This was a remarkable miracle in itself

3. The purpose of this meeting

a) To receive on behalf of Israel a Covenant with God
b) The tenor of the Covenant is in the Ten Commandments

THE EFFECTS OF THIS MEETING WITH GOD

1. The face of Moses shone

a) Moses was not conscious that his face shone
b) But others noticed and they were afraid of Moses
c) They were afraid of drawing near to him

2. The task that God assigned to Moses

a) To speak to Aaron and the rulers
b) To teach them about the Covenant with God

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE SHINING FACE OF MOSES

1. It reflected the glory of God

2. It reflected the close communion that he had with God

3. It confirmed Moses’ position and role as the God-appointed leader

4. It reflected the glory of the covenant God gave to Israel

5. It symbolised a special glimpse of being “transformed”

AN IMPORTANT COMMENTARY ON THE SHINING FACE OF MOSES

7 But if the ministry of death, written and engraved on stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of the glory of his countenance, which glory was passing away,

8 how will the ministry of the Spirit not be more glorious?

9 For if the ministry of condemnation had glory, the ministry of righteousness exceeds much more in glory.

10 For even what was made glorious had no glory in this respect, because of the glory that excels.

11 For if what is passing away was glorious, what remains is much more glorious.

12 Therefore, since we have such hope, we use great boldness of speech—

13 unlike Moses, who put a veil over his face so that the children of Israel could not look steadily at the end of what was passing away.

18 But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.

2 Corinthians 3:7-13, 18

1. The Old Covenant ministry

a) The ministry reflected glory
b) But it was a passing glory
c) It was not meant to be a permanent glory

2. The New Covenant ministry

a) It is more glorious
b) It is a ministry of righteousness
c) It has exceeding glory
d) It far excels that of the Old Covenant

OUR CHALLENGE

1. To appreciate that we have a New Covenant given by God

2. In the New Covenant

a) We have the ministry of the Spirit of God
b) We have a great hope
c) We can see the glory of the Lord
d) We are being transformed into the image of the Lord

3. Let us attempt the following:

a) To draw closer to the Lord
b) To see our lives transformed
c) To reflect the glory of God in our life
