The encouragement to keep words of wisdom

Words of wisdom are vital for our life. Our hope is that they will help us to make good choices and walk in the path of righteousness. These words of wisdom are from God and are specially taught to us. The author of Proverbs encourages us to sincerely and seriously keep these words: “My son, do not forget my law, but let your heart keep my commands;” (Proverbs 3:1) How should we learn to keep these words of wisdom?

1. Regard

  1. We ought to have a high regard for these words of wisdom.
  2. They are to be regarded as laws and commandments.

2. Remember

  1. The challenge is not to forget these laws as they are specially given to us.
  2. If we have a high regard for these words, we would learn to remember them.

3. Keep

  1. Our encouragement is to cherish and observe these words of wisdom.
  2. Let us be challenged to receive and heed these words in our heart…to keep them diligently.

The manner in which we keep these words of wisdom

“Let not mercy and truth forsake you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart,” (Proverbs 3:3)

1. The place of mercy and truth

  1. Mercy is the compassion and kindness that we show to people in need.
  2. Truth has to do with words that are genuine, factual and real.
  3. The encouragement is given for both mercy and truth to have a vital place in our lives.
  4. They are to be worn on our necks or placed before us so that we can be conscious of them.

2. Mercy and truth are to be inscribed on the tablets of our hearts

  1. They are to be appreciated and treasured in our hearts.
  2. Our desire would be to do things with mercy and truth in mind.

3. As we learn to keep these words of wisdom, we would do so with mercy and truth.

  1. Our desire is to show mercy to those who are in need of mercy.
  2. We seek to uphold the truth in what we say and do.

The blessings in keeping these words of wisdom

1. The blessing of life

“For length of days and long life and peace they will add to you.” (Proverbs 3:2)

In keeping these words of wisdom, we can hope for the Lord’s blessing of a prolonged life. Not only that, there would also be peace, stillness and tranquillity in life.

2. The blessing of favour and high esteem

“And so find favour and high esteem in the sight of God and man.” (Proverbs 3:4)

As we keep these words of wisdom, we hope to gain the favour and the high esteem of God and man. We would receive their approval and they would be pleased with us.

Let us be challenged to keep diligently the Lord’s words of wisdom so that we may be specially blessed.
