Text: Romans 10
Subject: “I was found by those who did not seek Me” Romans 10:20
19 But I say, did Israel not know? First Moses says:
“I will provoke you to jealousy by those who are not a nation,
I will move you to anger by a foolish nation.”
20 But Isaiah is very bold and says:
“I was found by those who did not seek Me;
I was made manifest to those who did not ask for Me.”
21 But to Israel he says:
“All day long I have stretched out My hands
To a disobedient and contrary people.”
Romans 10:19-21
INTRODUCTION
1. We have another complex series of texts to study
2. We will need to separate the texts in the first place
3. We will then have to see how the texts are tied in
THE FIRST TEXT
But I say, did Israel not know? First Moses says:
“I will provoke you to jealousy by those who are not a nation,
I will move you to anger by a foolish nation.”
Romans 10:19
1. Paul cited the book of Deuteronomy
2. This was a prophecy that the Gentiles would come to faith
3. The Jews would be provoked to jealousy
4. They would be angered because the Gentiles were considered “foolish” by the Jews, and yet they would make more advances in their faith than Israel
THE BOOK OF DEUTERONOMY
They have provoked Me to jealousy by what is not God;
They have moved Me to anger by their foolish idols.
But I will provoke them to jealousy by those who are not a nation;
I will move them to anger by a foolish nation.
Deuteronomy 32:21
1. Israel had done two things to God
a) Provoked God jealousy by worshipping idols
b) Made God angry by their foolishness
2. What God would do to Israel
a) To provoke Israel by the faith of the Gentiles
b) To make them angry by noting how God would bless the Gentiles
THE SECOND TEXT
But Isaiah is very bold and says:
“I was found by those who did not seek Me;
I was made manifest to those who did not ask for Me.”
Romans 10:20
1. Isaiah prophesied boldly
2. He spoke of Gentiles finding God real
3. God was made manifest to the Gentiles through preaching
THE BOOK OF ISAIAH
“I was sought by those who did not ask for Me;
I was found by those who did not seek Me.
I said, ‘Here I am, here I am,’
To a nation that was not called by My name.
Isaiah 65:1
1. Israel had a special relationship with God
a) It was called by God’s name
b) It had a special covenant relationship with God
c) But Israel did not seek God
2. The Gentiles did not have a covenant-relationship with God
a) But Gentiles sought the Lord
b) They found the Lord
c) This was a prophecy given by Isaiah
THE THIRD TEXT
But to Israel he says:
“All day long I have stretched out My hands
To a disobedient and contrary people.”
Romans 10:21
1. God had been reaching out to His people “all day long”
2. But Israel proved to be “a disobedient and contrary people”
ANOTHER TEXT FROM ISAIAH
I have stretched out My hands all day long to a rebellious people,
Who walk in a way that is not good,
According to their own thoughts;
Isaiah 65:2
1. God had not failed to do His part
a) In stretching out His hands
b) In speaking to His people, Israel
c) God had sent many prophets to Israel
2. Israel’s contrary ways
a) They were rebellious
b) They chose to walk on bad paths
c) They followed their own thoughts
WHAT WAS PAUL SEEKING TO EXPLAIN?

3. Gentiles had come to faith in the Lord and they were greatly blessed
4. Israel had no one to blame but themselves
