Money matters

It is vital to have the proper perspective concerning our funds. Whether we are wise or foolish in handling our funds can affect our lives in more ways than one. It is good that we learn how to use it prudently.

If we do not have a wise approach to the management of our funds and possessions, we can squander what we have. There is nothing wrong with buying things for our personal use. But we can also end up overspending on things we don’t need. Let us be challenged to consider whether we have been prudent in using our funds.

Understanding our possessions

How should we understand our possessions?

  1. Moses taught the people a vital truth concerning their wealth and possessions.
  2. He gave this instruction to them: “And you shall remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant…” (Deuteronomy 8:18)
  3. Let us not forget that the wealth and possessions that we have come from God.
  4. He gave us the grace and power to acquire these things and to have success.
  5. Without the Lord’s help, we would not have any wealth at all.
  6. Let us be challenged to show our deep appreciation of the Lord by honouring Him.

Honouring the Lord

“Honour the Lord with your possessions, and with the firstfruits of all your increase;” (Proverbs 3:9)

1. Our response to the Lord’s blessings is to honour Him.

  1. What does it mean to honour the Lord?
  2. It is to love and regard Him with great respect.
  3. Our honouring of God should not just be verbal but also in our expressions.
  4. It should be a reflection of a heart and spirit of love for the Lord.

2. We learn to honour the Lord with our possessions.

  1. We can express our regard by giving Him our possessions.
  2. He is deserving of our gifts for all that He has done for us.
  3. It is only right for us to honour God with our funds.
  4. The firstfruits is a reference to the first ripened fruit of a harvest.
  5. It is indicative of what will be the full harvest in time.
  6. It is always wonderful to see how brethren, in their own special way, learn to give when there is an ‘increase’ to their possessions.
  7. Let us be challenged to offer our gifts as a reflection of a heart of love to honour the Lord.

The blessings of the Lord

When we consider giving, we tend to think we are worse off regarding our possessions. But yet Solomon reminds us, “So your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will overflow with new wine.” (Proverbs 3:10) Even as we learn to give of our possessions, there is an assurance that the Lord will continue to bless us. We can trust and hope in God’s blessings of provision for our future. Let us be challenged to learn and grow in our understanding of money matters from the Lord’s Word. Let us be wiser in the use of our funds, especially in offering our gifts to the Lord.
